Hello Wolverine,
The MM550 XD is a good buy and it is one of the best 4X4 you can get here.I dont think it has any potential problems.
You can fix a Mahindra Armada Grand power steeering or Older Bolero's power steering.New Bolero's comes with rack and pinion steering which is not advisible to fix in vehicles with rigid axle in the front but the 4X4 Bolero's power steering can be fitted in the MM550.

| Thanks jeepgeorge for the valuable input....had read on some of the post that the 550xd has a body rattle problem....can u shed some light on that...plus i spoke to my mechanic who is restoring the jeep he said that he can put an electronic power steering as it requires less alteration...do u think its advisable or shall i stick with a hydraulic one as suggested...yeah and as some one asked i picked her up for 65000rs. its a 2001 model |

Hi Wolverine,
Can you be a little more specific on the rattling problem?Does the body rattle too much when the engine is on idle or is it the rattle of doors when the vehicle hits potholes.Make sure you have good engine and gearbox mounting bushes to absorb vibration transmited to the body.Rattling can also happen due to the Stiff leaf spring suspension transmiting road unevenness in to the body.Since the canopy is fixed using pipes which are not welded into a rigid structure they can vibrate.Even the original rool hoop cum door lock post on the MM550 is not strong and it will vibrate resulting in the doors also to rattle on hitting heavy potholes.I dont think there is any serious rattling problems as mentioned and small tinny rattling are part and parcel of jeeps as they dont have a closed rigid body structure like cars or SUVs.
Regarding the Electronic Power Steering(EPS) i would recomend not to try that. Some cars in India comes with EPS but that system cannot be adapted to a JEEP.The EPS works when the vehicle speed is low and as the vehicle speed increases the system gradually disables as during high speeds the vehicle steering becomes free naturally. The EPS is connected to the ECU(which your JEEP do not have) and is speed dependent, governed by the ECU.I feel this system will not work in your JEEP.It is dangerous to work in steering system with parts that are not proven.Has your mechanic tried this conversion before, if then first test drive that vehicle and may your JEEP not become a Guniea Pig to be experimented.Try only mahindra's original Power steering since it is proven and replacement parts are easily available. If you have any difficulty in sourcing the Hydraulic Power steering please let me know.
Any clarification please feel free to contact.
Wishes,
JEEPGEORGE

Hi Wolverine,
Congrats! I guess many of us are still thinking about building a reliable off-roading Jeep. I must commend you for taking the plunge. I am sure it’s going to be a good experience building your Jeep and even more fun taking it off-roading.
It would be really beneficial for many others like me if you could post pictures of the current state ‘before’ of the Jeep and later keep us posted on the progress / final ‘after’ pics. Request you to post other information about the jeep that might be available – year of manufacture, kms on the odo, state of the engine, gearbox, 4x4 system etc.
See this forum / post for some crazy Jeep mod jobs. They are simply stunning…

|
|
Hi,
Can anyone tell me why XD3P 2.5 Liter engine on the the Army version MM550 and the first Armada Grand used to make 75 BHP, but the one on the Bolero GLX makes only 68 bhp? Is it an adjustment in the diesel pump? Can the pump be re-caliberated for Power as opposed to milage? |

Hi There,
From where did you get the figure of 68bhp?
XD 3P engines produces 72.5 bhp and the DI Turbo engines produce 63bhp.The XDP 4.90 in the MM540 produces 62bhp.

Jeep George. You can see the specs on the mahindra web-site for the 4x4 Bolero with the XD3P engine. It gives the bhp as 68.
http://www.mahindra-bolero.com/Bolero-COMPARE.html
It's a bit confusing as the specs on the earlier version of the bolero was 72.5 bhp. |

Dear Toms,
From which part of kerala are you?
Is the XD3P engine in your JEEP factory fitted?
